“Dialogue: Representation and Abstraction” at the Guilford Art Center

“Dialogue: Representation and Abstraction” is the theme of the upcoming exhibition by the Artists of Gallery One (www.galleryonect.com). This controversial juxtaposition gets a fresh airing at the Guilford Art Center Mill Gallery. The opening reception is Sunday, June 9 from 1pm to 4pm. There will be a closing reception and artists talk on Sunday, June 30 from 2pm to 4pm.

The exhibition presents questions about the relationship between representation and abstraction. There is artwork which contains recognizable subject matter, such as trees, fruit, faces and figures. There is also artwork which seems to contain nothing recognizable, but emphasizes color, surface texture, shape and design.

“If the success of a representational painting or sculpture is due in part to its success in abstract terms, it would be reasonable to ask what is being represented by a successful abstraction?” observes Gallery One Director, Judith Barbour Osborne. “What makes it grab the viewer? What makes it sing? Where does abstraction end and representation begin?”

Twenty-five painters and sculptors––Gallery One members and invited guests–– are participating in this thought-provoking exhibition. Many of these artists are distinguished by being included in regional, national and international museum and gallery exhibitions and collections. Many have received awards and been featured in art publications. Those scheduled to exhibit are Corina Alvarezdelugo, Branford; Karen Bartone, Clinton; Elizabeth Boyd, Madison; David Brown, Old Saybrook; Ashby Carlisle, Old Lyme; Catherine Christiano, Old Lyme; Leslie Concannon, Bronx, NY; Mary Fussell, Clinton; Suzanne Wind Gaskell, Old Lyme; Denise Gaffney Hartz, Deep River; Gray Jacobik, Deep River; Sue Joffray, Old Lyme; Sheila Kacsmarek, Guilford; David Kintzler, Essex; Derek Leka, Sandy Hook; Molly S.
