Branford's fire history stretches back into the late 1800's with bucket brigades but in 1901 the town officially purchased land on Hillside Avenue to erect a fire station. With 35 career firefighters and 100 volunteers today, the fire department is busy around the clock helping the community and ensuring the safety of all with Branford resident, Chief Jack Ahern in charge.

According to the Branford Fire Department website, "the town of Branford supplied several lengths of fire hose and a nozzle, which were kept in Edward Knowles grocery store. A chapel bell would be rung to alert the volunteers when there was a fire."</p>

Rice, a member of the first Branford Board of Fire Commissioners, won the election, receiving 1,200 votes.</p> <p>One of the town's two fire trucks was stored at town hall at the turn of the century, and the M.P. Rice station was built shortly after to house the vehicle.</p> <p>Today Captain Brain Mazzarella leads the department. He and 27 volunteers work to serve the people of Branford.</p>
