In 1900, a raging fire claimed four buildings in Stony Creek including a store, library and church. As a result, the local bucket brigade expanded into the Stony Creek volunteer fire department.

Today the department, led by Captain Steve Palumbo Sr. and based on School Street and Thimble Island Road, is massive in size (for a volunteer department) and offers a hall for rental. It will also be the future home for the Stony Creek Museum and is presently the home of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 2401.

On site, the department has two engines, a brush truck, a rescue truck and a water rescue boat.
