Hornets Notes: Week in Review/Preview for May 4

A look back at the week that was in Branford and a glance ahead to next week.

The weather has begun to turn nicer this spring as the calendar switches to May. Today, we look back at the week that was and take a look at what's coming up in high school sports. If you want to see more action check out last week's and feel free to add your photos of local sporting events to the mix.

BASEBALL

The baseball team moved to 10-2 on the season with victories over North Haven, Jonathan Law, and Notre Dame-West Haven. The Hornets, the no. 3 team in the New Haven Register statewide poll, have been backed by solid pitching throughout the year, led by senior Jeff Stoddard. The Hornets beat North Haven 4-3 on April 27; beat Law 4-3 on April 29; and Notre Dame 4-3 on Monday.

The Hornets play two away games this week–at Career on Wednesday and at Wilbur Cross on Friday–before returning home Monday to host East Haven. That game will be at 4 p.m.

CO-ED SAILING

Branford High's co-ed Sailing Team finished it's first varsity season at 2-9. Their meet scheduled for Tuesday against East Lyme was cancelled. You can read more .

TENNIS

The girl's tennis team split a pair of matches in the last week, beating East Haven and losing to Sheehan. Against East Haven on April 27, Branford was paced by victories in the no. 1 singles match from Isabelle Ruddy who won in straight sets. Other singles winners were Jenny Liu, Zhanneta Khoultchaeva. In doubles, Branford's Kathryn Collins and Kayleen Kessler were victorious. On Monday, the team lost to Sheehan, 5-2. Branford winners were Jenny Liu and the doubles tandem of Collins and Kessler. On Tuesday, the Hornets played two matches against West Haven, beating them twice. Branford is now 7-3 on the season.

The boy's tennis team won two matches in the last week and dropped one.  They beat West Haven 7-0 on April 27 and Wilbur Cross 7-0 on April 29. On Monday, they got shut out by Cheshire 7-0.

GOLF

Branford High's golf team defeated Sheehan and Foran high schools at a tri-match this Monday at the . Senior Bryan Poole was the medalist, shooting a 39 for nine holes. Branford's team total was 176, Foran had 189, and Sheehan had 210. The Hornets are 6-3.

LACROSSE

The boy's lacrosse  team evened it's record at 4-4 on the season with victories against West Haven and North Haven. The Hornets defeated West Haven 18-4 on April 27, and beat North Haven 11-8 on April 29.

The girl's lacrosse team moved to 6-7 on the season by winning two games and dropping one in the past week. The Hornets lost to Daniel Hand 14-9 on April 27, but beat Housatonic Regional 16-5 on April 30, and beat Amity Regional 12-10 on Monday.

TRACK AND FIELD

The girl's track team stayed at .500 for the season, splitting a pair of dual meets in the last week. On Friday, the girls lost to East Haven and beat Lyman Hall. On Tuesday, the girls beat North Haven and lost to Guilford. The squad is 5-5-1 on the season.

SOFTBALL

The softball team moved to 3-9 on the season with a victory over North Haven and losses to Guilford and West Haven. The Hornets beat North Haven 7-4 on April 27. Guilford beat Branford 4-2 on April 29 and West Haven topped the Hornets 4-3 on Monday.
