Hornets Notes: Week in Review/Preview for May 11

A look back at the week that was in Branford and a glance ahead to next week.

Spring sports season is more than half over as teams move into the heart of May and look to qualify for the state tournament in the coming weeks. If you want to see more action check out last week's and feel free to add your photos of local sporting events to the mix

TRACK AND FIELD

Both the boys and girls track teams are tuning up for the Southern Connecticut Championships next week. On Saturday, several athletes competed at the Middletown Invitational where Branford earned several medals.

For the girls, Allie Kowelenko finished third in the 1600m run and fourth in the 800m. Senior co-caption Meg O'Brien finished sixth in the 3200m with a time of 11:40. Senior Katheryn Tickell finished fifth in the javelin. The girls 4X200 meter relay team of Madison Birney, Melissa Guilemette, Laura Peterson, and Kaitlin Kenney finished third.

For the boys, Brandon Johnson earned two medals, winning the triple jump and finishing sixth in the high jump. Senior Alex Case took first in the pole vault, clearing a height of 12 feet, six inches. You can . Senior Thomas Dextradeur finished third in the 3200m with a time of 9:55 while senior Sam Blackstone earned fifth in the javelin with a throw of 153 feet, four inches.

 On Tuesday, the boys lost a close meet to North Haven and are now 9-2. The girls defeated Wilbur Cross and Jonathon Law on Tuesday and now stand at 7-5-1. Thursday will be the final dual meet of the regular season for both the boys and girls before they compete at the SCC West Sectional meet Monday at Amity Regional High School. The SCC championships will be held May 24.

SOFTBALL

The softball team is hoping to quality for the state tournament by winning four of their final five games. Right now the team is 4-11 after losing 3-1 to East Haven on May 5; losing 5-4 to Career High School on May 6; and beating Lyman Hall 5-2 on Monday.Against Lyman Hall, senior Jess Bainer collected three RBI's to help lead the host Hornets to the victory.

The team needs to win eight games to qualify for the state tournament.

BASEBALL

The baseball team continued its winning ways by winning all three games it played over the last week. They are now 13-2 on the season.

The Hornets beat Career High School 4-3 on May 5 and then defeated Wilbur Cross 8-3 on May 6. On Monday, senior Jeff Stoddard pitched a complete game to help the Hornets defeat East Haven, 4-2.

TENNIS

The boys tennis team split two matches recently. The team lost to Fairfield Prep 7-0 on May 6, and then on Monday they defeated Xavier 6-1.

The girls tennis team lost three matches over the past week. They fell to North Haven 6-1 on May 5, then lost to Shelton 4-3 the next day. On Monday, they were shut out by Daniel Hand 7-0. They are now 7-6 on the season.

LACROSSE

The girls lacrosse team split a pair of games over the last week and are now 7-8. On May 5, they beat Mercy High 9-5 and on May 6, they lost to Hall High School 16-8.

The boys lacrosse team has moved above .500, beating Amity Regional 14-9 on May 5 and then defeating Old Saybrook 14-10 on May 7. The Hornets lost to Daniel Hand on Monday, 19-7. They are 6-5 on the season and have five games left in the regular season.
