Hornets Notes: Week in Review/Preview for June 1

A look back at the week that was in Branford and a glance ahead to upcoming events

As the calendar turns to June and the weather heats up, the spring high school sports season comes to an end. This week, the baseball team has advanced in the state playoffs, while the boy's lacrosse team gets ready to make a run in the state tournament. The girls and boys track teams competed in the state meets.

BASEBALL

The baseball team opened the CIAC Class L playoffs with a 5-0 victory over Daniel Hand High School. The Hornets were paced by starting pitcher Jeff Stoddard who struck out 11 and allowed four hits. Senior Sam Kraszewski had two hits and knocked in three runs to pace the Hornet offense.

TRACK AND FIELD

Both the boys and girls track teams competed at the Class M State Championship meet Tuesday at Middletown High School. The boys finished in 11th place while the girls finished in 16th. Several athletes, however, advanced to the State Open next week based on their performance in the state meet.

On the girl's side, Meg O'Brien finished 5th in the 3200 meter run to qualify for the State Open. In addition, the girl's 4X400 meter relay team of Allie Kowolenko, Alex Tracy, Melissa Guillemette, and Kaitlin Kenney took second place in that event to advance to the State Open.

For the boys, three athletes advanced to the State Open. Alex Case finished second in the pole vault by clearing a height of 13 feet, six inches. Brandon Johnson finished second in the triple jump. Sam Blackstone was fifth in the javelin throw.

TENNIS

The boys tennis team will be competing in the Class M state tournament, which starts Thursday at Yale University. The competition will continue through the rest of the week with matches at Yale and Hamden High School.

LACROSSE

The boys lacrosse team will open its Class M state tournament with a game against Avon on Wednesday. The 9-7 Hornets enter the tournament ranked no. 11 in the Class M division.

GOLF

Seniors Josh Panczak and Bryan Poole competed Tuesday at the Southern Connecticut Conference golf championships at Brooklawn Country Club in Fairfield. Poole shot an 87 and Panczak an 89 on the par 71, 6,711-yard course.
