Hornets Notes: Week in Review/Preview for April 27

A look back at the week that was in Branford and a glance ahead to next week

Spring sports season is well underway in Branford, and with it comes unpredictable weather. Rain and cold temperatures wreaked havoc on sports schedules last week, but this week warmer weather has returned. Today, we look back at the week that was and take a look at what's coming up in high school sports. If you want to see more action check out last week's and feel free to add your photos of local sporting events to the mix.

TENNIS

The girl's tennis team lost to Amity 7-0 on Thursday, April 21, and beat Jonathon Law 7-0 on Monday, and Sacred Heart 6-1 on Tuesday. At Tuesday's match, the Hornets were led by Jenny Liu, Julia Watsky, and Maria Quagliano who each notched victories. The number one doubles tandem of Kathryn Collins and Kayleen Kessler were also winners. The Hornets are now 4-2.

The boy's tennis team beat Maloney 7-0 on Thursday, April 21, and then shut out Career High School 7-0 on Monday.

TRACK AND FIELD

Both the boys and girls track teams competed at the Irv Black Invitational in New Britain last Saturday. The meet, one of the largest in New England, was held in raw, rainy conditions. However, several athletes earned medals, led by the girl's 800 sprint medley relay team which placed first. Runners on the relay were Madison Birney, Hunter Carden, Brianna Willaby, and Kaitlin Kenney.  Kenney also placed fifth in the 400 meters. You can watch a video of Kenney's 400 race here.

The girls also beat West Haven on Tuesday by a score of 86 to 62. The girl's team's record is 3-3-1 with an important meets coming up Thursday against East Haven and next week at Wilbur Cross. The boy's team is 5-1 and will face off against Career High School Wednesday. Last week, the boy's also held their third annual Alumni v. Varsity meet,

LACROSSE

On Thursday, April 21 the boy's lacrosse team lost to Guilford 10-8 and lost to Cheshire on Monday, 14-7. Against Cheshire, Branford's Harrison Goodkind scored four goals and goalie Shane O'Keefe had 14 saves. Branford is 2-4 on the season. This week, the Hornets will host West Haven on Wednesday and face North Haven on Friday.

The girl's lacrosse team beat Sacred Heart 13-11 on Thursday, April 21 and beat Hamden 14-10. The Hornets face Daniel Hand Wednesday and home Saturday against Housatonic Regional.

BASEBALL

The boy's baseball team defeated East Haven 6-3 on Thursday, April 21 and lost to Amity on Monday by a score of 9-5. With the split, Branford is 7-2 on the season. The Hornets will host North Haven Wednesday and travel to Jonathan Law on Friday.

SOFTBALL

The softball team lost to Lyman Hall 3-0 on Thursday, April 21 and beat Wilbur Cross 8-0 on Monday. With the win, Branford is 2-7 on the season. They will host North Haven Wednesday and Guilford Friday.

GOLF

The Golf team split a match on Tuesday, losing to Hamden, but beating Guilford at the Pine Orchard Country Club. During the match, Hamden shot a combined 177, Branford a 183, and Guilford a 189.
