Construction of a fish ladder at the Land Trust’ and Queach Brook preserves, which have , are aiding the efforts by state conservation officials to increase herring spawning in Connecticut.
An article in the New Haven Register said that an automatic fish counter at the fish ladder on Queach Brook registered its best year in 2011, counting over 9,000 alewife herring, almost three times its previous best annual count.
Other Connecticut rivers have also benefited from the construction of fish ladders, but the Register said this year’s ongoing drought has resulted in low water levels in Branford that have sharply reduced the herring count for this year.
