Branford Boys’ Swimming Takes Fifth in Class M

Congratulations to the Hornets’ boys’ swim team on its fifth-place finish in the Class M State Championship.

 

The good news keeps coming for Branford High School’s winter sports teams as the boys’ swim team earned fifth place in a 23-team field at the Class M State Championship with 380 points on March 13. Brookfield (707), New Canaan (572), East Lyme (556) and Wethersfield (538) topped Branford.

Dean Conte came into the meet having already captured the Class M title in 1-meter diving with a score of 426.8.

Ali Pourmaleki finished fourth in the 100-yard butterfly (53.41) with Alec Boucher (18th, 58.12) and Nathaniel Barton (22nd, 59.65) also competing for Branford. Pourmaleki then took fifth in the 100-yard backstroke in 55.25.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Pourmaleki, Quinn Bohan, Boucher and Alex Gogliettino took sixth place with a time of 1:43.77; while the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Gogliettino, Thomas Shao, Tyler Shand and Travis Charlow was 10th with a time of 1:37.78. The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Charlow, Shao, Shand and Pourmaleki earned seventh in 3:26.92.

Three Hornets swam in the 500-yard freestyle including Shand (10th, 5:01), Benjamin Greenvall (14th, 5:15.69) and Brian Curseaden (17th, 5:16.22). Bohan was seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.83) followed by Gogliettino in eighth (1:03.12).

In the 200-yard freestyle, Shand was 11th (1:49.45), just edging teammate Charlow, who took 12th (1:50.57). Shao (23rd, 1:57.73) and Greenvall (24th, 1:57.88) also competed in the event. Charlow’s time of 50.47 earned him 12th place in the 100-yard freestyle.

Branford also had four competitors in the 200 individual medley, including Gogliettino in 12th (2:07.71), Boucher in 13th (2:08.06), Curseaden in 19th (2:12.04) and Barton in 24th (2:16.92).
