15th Annual Hammerfest Triathalon a Great Success

This year's version of the annual Hammerfest Triathlon draws large crowds of both contestants and fans last Sunday at Owenego.

A very substantial crowd of both participants and spectators gathered last Sunday at the for the 7:30 a.m. start of this year's .

The event, consisting of a half mile swim off the beach at Owenego, followed by a thirteen-mile bike ride (two laps from there around the Pine Orchard golf course), and then a three-and-a-half mile run (down from four miles thanks to the by ) around Pawson Park, raised money for the benefit of the Myelin Project

The Myelin Project raises money for research into diseases, which affect the material that sheathes the nerves.  The consequences of these diseases – which include the leukodystrophies and multiple sclerosis - are drastic and include the loss of the abilities to walk, talk or speak.

Among the organizers of the event are Jean and Jack Kelley, whose son Brian Kelley has been afflicted with adrenoleukodystrophy, or ALD, for 17 years, since the age of six.  With them in producing the event are the members of Branford's Race Productions, including Michael D'Addetta, Ron Meneo, Scott Roth, and Margit MacDougal as the race Directors. Jane Rosenthal, owner of the Owenego and manager John Bloomquist have welcomed the event for fifteen years.

In addition to the race's primary sponsor, as well as many other local businesses contributed to the occasion financially and/or in services and assistance.

Among the many other volunteers helping to make the triathlon a success, Jean specifically notes the contributions of Captain Geoffrey Morgan, who was instrumental in helping devise a plan to safely negotiate the partially destroyed Linden Avenue and scuba diver Ed Fay who did an underwater survey and removed debris from the beach of the Owenego following Irene to ensure a safe swim for the athletes.
