Meet the Man Behind the Scenes: Alex Acunzo

Every musical needs someone to keep the cast and crew inline and Phantom can thank the ever-organized BHS senior for helping to make the show a reality.

Alex Acunzo doesn’t seem like your typical high school senior. “I always carry my binder with me,” said Acunzo. “If it’s not with me, I am lost; organization is key.”

Inside his black Swiss Army binder is the who, what, when and where of this year’s spring musical .

Acunzo has been part of the performing arts group since his sophomore year when he started as a stage manager in training (SMIT) for Pirates of Penzance. However, Acunzo hasn’t always been just behind the scenes. He has participated in the school’s concert choir all four years. “I just don’t belong to any elite groups,” said Acunzo, “I just like to sing.”

Acunzo will graduate from BHS this June and will head to Providence College as a second-generation student from his family to attend the school. He plans to study business and hospitality.

Q: Why did you sign up every year to be part of the BHS spring musical?
A:
I love BHS. I love my community and I love giving back. The musical is the second most attended event in Branford and I love Branford so that means I also love the musical.

Q: What is the hardest part about being the stage manager?
A:
Yelling at people. I don’t want to yell at people but I am passing the word along so sometimes you have to use a little umph.

Q: What do you like most about your role?
A: The leadership.

Q: What has been your favorite musical so far?
A: I loved Pirates because it was a bunch of pirates on stage and who doesn’t love that? But who I am in the program this year and the connection I have with everyone – this year will be my favorite.

Meet the Technical Crew on Thursday for the next installment of the Behind the Mask Series.
