Grades Out for School Cafeterias

New Haven Independent complies results of health inspections in schools throughout the state, town schools scores high.

Restaurants are routinely subjected to inspections from state and local health departments to ensure sanitary conditions, but what about the food school children are eating?

The New Haven Independent (the Branford Eagle's parent news site) recently compiled data on school cafeterias statewide through an initiative Connecticut Health I-Team (C-HIT) and posted the results by municipality.

Two inspections of each Branford school were conducted in March and October of 2010 and rated on a 1 to 100 point scale. In general, inspections resulted in high grades for the schools, with infractions ranging from "serving utensils jumbled in drawer" to "mouse droppings found."

St. Mary's School received the highest scores, a 97 and 98, while Branford High School scored a 91 and 86–the lowest scored.

All three elementary schools and the middle school were inspected.
