Four Branford Teams End Fall Season in State Tourney

The Hornets' two soccer squads, the field hockey team and the volleyball team all competed in the state tournament to cap the 2012 season.

 

Aside from the 4-4 Branford High School football team's remaining regular-season games, the rest of the Hornets' teams finished their fall seasons in the past week with four squads making solid showings in the state tournament. Great season Branford! 

Girls' Soccer

The Branford girls' soccer team's 10-5-1 regular-season record earned the Hornets the 10th seed in the Class L State Tournament.

Branford hosted 23rd-seeded Wethersfield (7-8-1) in the first round on Nov. 9, building on its recent SCC Championship with a 1-0 win. The Hornets advanced to the second round on Nov. 12 where they fell to seventh-seeded Joel Barlow 3-1 to end the 2012 season. 

Boys’ Soccer

The boys’ soccer team, which lost a 1-0 heartbreaker in the  also finished its season in the second round of the Class L State Tournament. The Hornets finished the regular season with a 10-2-4 record to earn the No. 9 seed.

In first-round action on Nov. 10, the Hornets hosted 24th-seeded East Lyme (6-8-2), taking a 2-1 win to advance to the second round where they faced eighth-seeded Farmington, which took a 2-1 win to end Branford's 2012 season.

Field Hockey

As the No. 6 seed in the Class M State Tournament with a 9-3-3-1 regular-season record, the Branford field hockey team took a 1-0 win over 11th-seeded Pomperaug in a game the Hornets hosted on Nov. 10.

The victory set up the quarterfinal matchup between third-seeded Farmington (14-1-0-1 regular season) and Branford at Farmington on Nov. 12. The home team edged Branford 1-0 to advance to the semifinals.  

Volleyball

In the Class L State Tournament, Branford took the No. 13 seed with a 13-5 regular-season record to be pitted against 20th-seeded Pomperaug (9-8) in the first round on Nov. 8 in a home contest.

In a back-and-forth battle, Pomperaug came out on top in a five-game match, taking the first two games 25-14 and 25-19 before the Hornets pushed back to win the next two 25-22. In the deciding match, Pomperaug was victorious 15-11 to end Branford's season.
