Branford Schools Reject $3,000 Donation From Plastic Surgeon

The district superintendent said he was concerned about the message such a gift from a plastic surgeon would send.

School Superintendent Hamlet Hernandez refused a $3,000 school donation last month from a local plastic surgeon, citing concerns about the message the donation could send to his pupils.

Kati Midgely, co-owner of Branford's Fuzion Medical Aesthetic Boutique, sought to make donations to local districts in honor of her sister, who died. From Jan. 1 to May 15, she took 3 percent of her sales and donated them to local schools, with some of her clients donating additional money, according to the New Haven Register.

She made the donations to five districts, Branford, North Branford, North Haven, East Haven giving each $3,000, the Register reports. While three took the money, Hernandez rejected  the donation to his district. He said he was worried that taking it from a plastic surgeon would send the wrong message to students.

“We have students who deal with eating disorders and body issues every day,” he told the Register.
