Branford Hornets Well-Represented in SCC Tourney

The Southern Connecticut Conference tournaments are underway and many of Branford's teams are still alive.

 

Hurricane Sandy may have thrown off postseason tournament dates and left many in the dark, but the Branford Hornets' teams have been fully charged throughout the Southern Connecticut Conference (SCC) playoffs with all Branford teams still in it to win it.

Volleyball

The first round of SCC's opened up on Oct. 27 as sixth-seeded Branford hosted 11th-seeded Jonathan Law, taking a 25-17, 25-22, 25-20 win to send them to the quarterfinals on Nov. 2.

The Hornets will travel to Woodbridge to take on Amity, the No. 3 seed. During the regular season, Branford pulled out identical 3-2 victories over the Spartans, one at Amity on Sept. 19 and the other at Branford on Oct. 9.

The winner moves on to the semifinals, which are scheduled for Nov. 5 and 6 with the championship game slated for Wednesday, Nov. 7 at North Haven High School at 6 p.m.

Field Hockey

Branford earned the No. 4 seed in field hockey, hosting fifth-seeded Hamden in the quarterfinals on Nov. 3. The Hornets took a 2-1 win and will travel to Cheshire to take on the top-seeded Rams on Nov. 5 at 5 p.m. During the regular season, Branford lost to Cheshire twice, a 3-1 decision on Sept. 14 and a 2-0 loss on Oct. 22.

The championship game is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 6 at 6 p.m., also to be played at Cheshire High School. The winner of the Cheshire-Branford game will take on the winner of the Hand-Guilford semifinal matchup.

Girls' Soccer

In girls' soccer action, sixth-seeded Branford upset No. 3 seed Hamden 4-2 in the quarterfinals on Oct. 27 to advance to the Nov. 5 semifinals. The Hornets will host seventh-seeded Hand at 7 p.m.

The winner will take on Shelton, the No. 4 seed, on Tuesday, Nov. 6 at West Haven High School at 6 p.m.

Boys' Soccer

On the boys' side, the Hornets earned the No. 3 seed in the tournament, shutting out sixth-seeded Guilford 3-0 in the quarterfinals. The win pits Branford against Amity, the No. 2 seed, on Monday, Nov. 5 at 2:30 p.m. 

The championship game will be played following the girls' finals on Tuesday, Nov. 6 at 7:30 p.m., also at West Haven High School.

Girls' Swimming and Diving

The diving championship is Monday, Nov. 5 at Hamden High School with 3 p.m. warm-ups and 4:30 competition. The championship swim meet is Monday, Nov. 5 at SCSU's Moore Fieldhouse at 6 p.m.

rather harsh and does not mention Congress or that fact that any CEO expects their chain of commandRead More to do the job assigned. The events of the last few years, the endless wars, homeland terrorism etc. Not an easy time for any Commander -in Chief. When an article simply slams and does not balance with positive accomplishments, it is hard to see the readers point of view
