BHS Football Players Scoop as 2012 Fundraising Kicks Off

The 2012 team spent three hours serving ice cream at Ben & Jerry's.

To kick off its 2012 fundraising efforts, the Gridiron Club put Branford's high school football team to work. Team members scooped ice cream at Ben & Jerry's from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and in return the store gave a portion of its proceeds during the day to the Club. Funds will provide for a variety of perks for the Hornets in 2012, including transportation, post-game dinners, t-shirts for players and senior gifts.

"We love doing it," said Andrew Klarman, a senior captain who helped scoop. "It's a fun way to raise money and it gives us a chance to work together." Klarman said morale is high for the coming season, and the team takes every chance they can to practice functioning as a unit.

Klarman's mother Lexie is the Gridiron Club's treasurer.

"You know, today was just a fun day," she said. "We raised a little money, scooped some ice cream. I think it'll certainly help us buy some t-shirts for the team."

On Thursday, the team will wrap up ten days of spring practice allowed by state rules with an exhibition game at the high school. And more Gridiron Club fundraising activities will follow, including a car wash June 23.
