For the first two days, it was a close call between Eli's on the Hill and Donovan's Reef. But at the halfway point, and with over 100 votes in, the Route 1 burger bar has taken a commanding lead. (Maybe they had a particularly good cook in the kitchen last night.) Late surger Tommy Sullivan's has closed a respectable amount of ground, but can its devoted fans take it all the way?

In its purest form it's just a beef patty on a bun. But today's burgers are much more complex, with toppings that range from the classic lettuce, tomato, pickles, ketchup and mustard to items that include everything from bacon, mushrooms, jalepenos and avacado to a fried egg or chili. You could even get a burger made from turkey meat or bison, or a veggie one, too.
When it comes down to it, you could put just about anything on a burger. And there are some great restaurants serving some incredible burgers right here in Branford.
