Make Sure Your Dogs Aren’t Outlaws

License your dog during the month of June and avoid a potential $75 fine.

The issued a press release reminding residents that June is the month to make sure your dogs are licensed. This yearly duty costs $8 for fixed male and female dogs and $19 for those not spayed or neutered.

Licensing is offered at the Town Clerk’s Office in Town Hall, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and at the , Monday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Thursday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

By Connecticut state statue, all dogs must be licensed and those in violation can be fined $75. In order to obtain a dog license, the animal must be rabies vaccinated. The Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter in conjunction with the Branford Veterinary Hospital will be holding a on the Green, Saturday, June 4 from 10 a.m. to noon. The first 50 pets will get free vaccinations but the general cost is $5 per pet.

2011-12 licenses are good until June 30, 2012; residents who purchase licenses after June 30 this year are subject to a $1 late fee (see attached PDF for more rules). The benefit of having a licensed dog in addition to avoiding the fine, is that you can search your pet’s id number online through the town website, should he or she get lost.
