Four Govenor's Foot Guards to Convene on Town Green

This year, the CT Second Company Governor’s Foot Guard is the host unit of the Annual Joint Review of the Four Organized Militia Companies of the State of Connecticut.

On Saturday, September, the First Company Governor’s Foot Guard ( Hartford ), the Second Company Governor’s Foot Guard (Branford), the First Company Governor’s Horse Guard (Avon), and the Second Company Governor’s Horse Guard (Newtown ),will join together on the historic for a spectacular Military Review. This will be the first time in the two hundred and thirty plus years of the Governor’s Guards that all four units will be present in Branford.

The event will start at 11:40 a.m. with a short parade from the to the historic Branford Town Green. At noon, there will be a review of the troops, including music by the bands of the First and Second Companies of the Governor’s Foot Guards and by the Field Music of the Second Company, Governor’s Foot Guard. State long service medals and Soldier of the Year Awards will also be made. The troops will be inspected and then pass in review and return to the Branford Armory. The distinctive colorful dress uniforms will certainly add to the pageantry of this Review, which celebrates the unique history of the Connecticut Organized Militia and honors the men and women who volunteer so much of their time to serve our Great State .

Governor Daniel Malloy has been invited to the Review, Congresswoman Rosa Delauro will attend, and a number of State, Military and Local officials are expected to attend this prestigious event.

Furthermore, 2011 marks the beginning of the Sesquicentennial Anniversary of the American Civil War. As part of this year’s Joint Review, we will be recognizing the contribution of the Second Company Governor’s Foot Guard during that terrible war that saved the Union and ended slavery. Members of the Second Company formed Company K of the Sixth Connecticut Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Organized in September, 1861, Company K and the Sixth Connecticut served for four long years, participating in over 26 engagements, including the Battle of Fort Wagner (or Battery Wagner, which was recently made famous by the hit movie, Glory). This Joint Review will be the beginning of what we expect to be a four year celebration and remembrance of the Second Company’s contribution during the Civil War.
