First Selectman Cosgrove: 'Let's Do Some Good' [VIDEO]

Branford's new First Selectman Jamie Cosgrove was sworn into his first term of office Tuesday during a special ceremony at the Blackstone Library.

Branford's new First Selectman Jamie Cosgrove is ready to roll up his sleeves — and get to work.

"Well it’s finally time to get started," Cosgrove said to kick off his inaugural speech Tuesday.

Cosgrove took the oath of office, along with other newly elected town officials, during a ceremony this morning at the James Blackstone Memorial Library.

The event featured a special performance from Cosgrove's daughter Ava, who sang the national anthem as part of the morning's festivities. (See the video posted above)

Swearing In Speech

The following is the full prepared text of Cosgrove's inaugural speech:

Well it’s finally time to get started.

I want to thank all of you for helping me start my first day of work for the people of Branford.

I know that every day won’t start with Ava singing me the national anthem at breakfast.

But this will be a day I never forget.

Today is not a day for speeches, we have a lot of work to do.  But before we start, let me tell you a story.

Many of you know that today is my grandfather’s 96th birthday.   He’s a pretty happy guy today.

On Election Night, my Aunt Susan told him the good news.  The next afternoon I went to visit him.

He asked about Nicole.  Then he asked about our kids. He didn’t say anything about the election.  So I said, “Pop, you know I’m the First Selectman now?”

He said, “Yea, heard it was 2-1.”  I said yep.  He said, “You’re a Republican, huh.”  I said yep.

Then he said, “Well then go do some good, do some good.”

Do some good…that’s really what it’s all about.

So let’s leave here this morning united.

Let’s work hard every day for the people of Branford.

Let’s listen with respect to every citizen.

Let’s be fair and open and honest about meeting the challenges we face.

And most importantly … let’s go do some good.

Thank you all very much.
