Branford Says No To Gun-And-Ammunition-Free Zones

A controversy that began when TGS Outdoors opened on Main Street has been settled.

This month, a Branford committee voted against creating areas in town where it would be illegal to sell guns and ammunition.

Earlier this month, the Branford Rules and Ordinances Committee unanimously voted against creating areas in town where it would be illegal to sell guns and ammunition, according to the Shoreline Times. The committee voted against creating such districts after they were told they wouldn't be legal, according to the Times.

“We as a committee said we’d be reckless if we created an ordinance our town attorney couldn’t back legally,” Adam Hansen, the chairman of the committee, told the Shoreline Times. “We could open up ourselves to a lawsuit.”

Some residents pushed for an ordinance to be created after TGS Outdoors, a shop that sells guns and ammunition, opened at the beginning of this year in downtown Branford - just after the Sandy Hook massacre. However, Branford Town Attorney William Clendenen concluded that banning the sale of guns and ammunition in certain areas of town couldn't be "backed-up legally," according to the Times.
