Branford RTM On Proposed Pet Store Ban: We'll Get To It Next Year

Wednesday evening, the Branford Representative Town Meeting agreed to postpone its discussions on whether or not to allow the retail sale of pets in town until January.

The Branford Eagle reports that the RTM pushed back discussions on a proposed ordinance that would ban the retail sale of dogs, cats and rabbits in Branford after the group agreed it didn’t have enough time or enough information to act this year. Instead, the RTM agreed to wait until a state task force that is investigating the issue to release its findings, which is expected to happen in January, according to the website.

Animal right activists proposed banning the retail sale of pets in town to avoid “puppy mills,” or organizations that raise dogs in poor conditions to make more profit. The town held a public hearing on the ordinance earlier this month, which brought out dozens of people on both sides of the issue.
