A Basketball Court is Named for Dominic Buonocore; Stony Creek Quarry Lease Agreement Advances; Two Service Contracts Approved

The Board of Selectmen June 15 meeting also sees continued discussion about bringing Costco to Branford.

  • On the recommendation of Otto Berger, Branford’s lead tradesman, the board voted to waive bids for two service contracts and continue with the current contractors. The contractors are Bridgeport-based Ratick Combustion for boiler maintenance and W.J. Dornfeld Co., Inc., of East Haven, for HVAC maintenance. The rates of both will be held constant.
  •  An agreement between the Town of Branford and Yale University was approved. The pact brings to Branford three supervised fellows from the Yale Child Study Center, specializing in psychotherapy and psychopharmacology, to work with local children between July 1, 2011, and June 30, 2012. The cost will not exceed $32,000.
  •  The board recommended forwarding to the RTM for committee consideration a new lease agreement between the town and the Stony Creek Quarry Corporation.
  •  The board favored naming the basketball court in honor of Dominic A Buonocore. A proclamation highlighting Buonocore’s more than 50 years of service to the Branford community was read. The dedication will take place, rain or shine, June 25 beginning at 11 a.m.
  • Correspondence from resident Wayne Cooke dated May 17, 2011 was discussed. Cooke’s concerns centered on safety of the Tabor property. Selectmen noted that the town is engaged in ongoing testing of the property to make sure it is safe for planned open-space development.
  • Cooke also was among those who spoke during the public comment portion of the meeting. Topics included perceived impediments to establishing Costco in Branford. Cooke accused the board of “backroom” maneuvers. Selectmen countered that there are no such alleged backroom dealings, and that at this juncture the proper bodies that should be considering the Costco issue are and the .
