Town Removes DaRos Dishonest Signs; They May Be Treated With Chemical Agent

Tonight public works began hauling away resident Wayne Cooke's signs.

The Branford Police Department is actively investigating that some of the red and white signs posted throughout Branford with the wording may have been chemically treated with a substance know as Bird Gel, which contains the active ingredient polybutene and is commonly used by property owners to keep wild birds from perching in unwanted areas.

Police Chief Kevin Halloran indicated that the department became aware of the circumstance after a volunteer fireman and a citizen removed signs they found posted on their property and reported that when they touched the sign, they were exposed to some sort of chemical and became concerned.

Police investigators contacted and conferred with representatives of Poison Control who indicated although the substance “Bird Gel” is nontoxic, precautions for safe handling include: Keeping away from children, domestic animals and pets. Health Hazard Data (Acute and Chronic) indicate: No significant health hazard exists at ambient temperatures. Redness and irritation may occur on contaminated skin and eye contact may be slightly irritating, but product does not cause long term adverse health effects. For hot product, cool immediately and treat as burn. First Aid Procedures indicate: Wash exposed areas with a mild solvent (baby oil or mineral spirits) followed by soap and water.
