State Denies Town Recommendation for Stop Sign at Indian Neck Three-Way Intersection

A long-discussed solution to what neighborhood residents have called a dangerous intersection at South Montowese and Sybil and Linden avenues is denied by the state.

Earlier this week, the Traffic Committee and  once again discussed a request for a , which is South Montowese Street, and Linden and Sybil avenues. At present, a stop sign exists on Linden, although, as state highways, both South Montowese Street and Sybil Avenue are under state jurisdiction.

Rather than give its approval to a stop sign on one of the two state roads, Gott reported that the state has denied the town’s recommendation for the sign. It observed that the site lines along the roads were sufficient for the current speed limit of 25 miles per hour.  The state noted that the site lines could be improved if hedges along Linden Street were trimmed. Gott said he will visit the intersection to see if the hedges can be cut.

“The state said no,” said Gott, simply, of the additional sign.

In other matters, the committee and board denied a sign forbidding overnight parking at Yale Court in the section of town, noting that Yale Court was not a town road.

It denied a request for a stop sign at the intersection of Route 146 (Leetes Island Road) and Flat Rock Road, while recommending the approval of additional signage to discourage trucks from using Route 740 (Brushy Plain Road) as it moves toward Route 80.
