Pickup Truck Hits House on Fuller Drive

Driver taken to hospital but nine residents home at time were not injured.

A pick-up truck slammed into the corner of a home at 35 Fuller Dr. in West Hartford early Wednesday morning causing major damage to the home and minor injuries to the driver.

Nine residents, including three children, were in the home at the corner of Fuller and Mohegan Dr. when the truck struck right around 7 a.m.

Resident Yves Nham said he was sleeping at the time when he heard "a big noise."

"I thought a tree fell and I came down and saw the car here." He said he smelled gas and his father, who was one of the other residents at home, quickly shut off power to the house while he called 911.

Three children were in the house at the time, and went to stay with an aunt nearby.

The truck hit the corner of the house, and exterior damage is siginificant. It also broke a water pipe, and Nham said there was already about eight inches of water in the basement.

He said that the building inspector told the family that he had "never seen anything like this before," and that the house was uninhabitable. They plan to stay with relatives in the area. Nham said they have lived in this home since 2003.

According to police, the truck was traveling south on Mohegan Dr. Black ice at the intersection of Mohegan and Fuller may have played a role in the accident.

The driver of the truck was taken to St. Francis Hospital but police say that injuries were minor. He was pinned in the vehicle for a short time, police said, but they were able to extricate him by removing the truck's dashboard and he was talking to them at the scene.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
