Moped Rider Struck and Thrown on Leetes Island Road

Rider was taken to hospital.

A moped rider was struck this afternoon just after 1 p.m. by a SUV at the intersection of Leetes Island Road and East Main Street (across from the USS Chowder Pot III). The driver of the moped was thrown from the bike.

who arrived on scene, said the victim was conscious and was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital. Though the exact injuries were unknown, the fire department official said the injuries could potentially be significant.

The moped, which had a 250cc motor, is classified as a motorcycle.

Branford Police Department's Captain Geoffrey Morgan reported that the moped driver was traveling eastbound on East Main Street and the SUV driver was traveling westbound on East Main Street. The SUV made a left in front of the moped and hit the rider.

Both people were issued tickets, reported Morgan, but the details of the arrests were not available.

The driver of the SUV reported fire officials, refused treatment and transport but was very shaken-up by the incident.
