Update 5:17 p.m.
Chief Jack Ahern reports that a falling tree has caused the closure of Montowese Street in both directions between Wilford Road and Pine Orchard Road this afternoon. The road is estimated to be closed for up to three hours while crews from CL&P work on the area. By 5:15 p.m. today as rush hour had Montowese Street jamming, the tree had not been removed.
Traffic traveling south on Montowese Street has been diverted to Wilford Road while traffic traveling north on Montowese Street has been diverted to Pine Orchard Road.
Ahern said the tree has fallen into the power lines but it does not appear that power has been affected at this time or any lines have actually been taken down by the falling tree.
The tree, located near the sidewalk north of the Armory, had become uprooted around noon today authorities stated and began falling.
Branford Public Works Department was on scene this evening waiting for CL&P to remove the tree safely from the power lines. The DPWD is responsible for cutting up the tree and removing it once CL&P clears it from the lines and takes it down.
The school district had been notified of the incident and buses planned alternate routes, said Ahern.
