Branford Man Arrested for Killing His Dog

The 22-year-old is charged with cruelty to animals and released on a promise to appear in court.

A 22-year-old Branford man was arrested today for allegedly choking his pit bull-boxer mix to death and discarding the dog in a plastic bag in the woods.

Branford police officers, along with a state animal control officer, arrested Alex Wullaert, of 57 East Main Street.

Wullaert reportedly killed the dog in January but it was not discovered until March 11 when a Madison resident came upon the carcas in the woods by a lake in that town, according to police. State Animal Control Officer Todd Curry, who works for the State of Connecticut Department of Agriculture, said the investigation began that day when the resident reported the finding to Madison Police.

Madison Police Officer Kimberly Lauria, who investigated the incident, was able to determine that Wullaert was the owner of the deceased animal due to an identifiable micro-chip that was recovered during a necropsy, police said.

“Through her further diligent investigation, Officer Lauria was able to contact and later interview Wullaert, who confessed that he choked the animal at his Branford home after it urinated on this leg and bit him,” Curry said.

“The local officer did an excellent job,” he added.

Wullaert was charged with cruelty to animals and littering, and was released on a written promise to appear in New Haven Superior Court on May 15.

Young foolish Kid Dogs will defend themselves from harm by biting and peeing on you. I bet he was playing rough and the dog bite him so as he was killing it out of hate for his own fault the dog will pee I think any scumbag that kills or hurts an animal deserves to be placed in jail and rot Or maybe we can save tax payers cash and do the same to him

If this guy has a child he should lose all custody rights. He can't care for a dog so how can he care for a child? This brings tears to my eyes, as I hug and love my own dog.

Depending on the judge this cruel and disturbed "adult" (let's remember that adults younger than he go to war and defend our country) might go to jail, might receive a $5.000 fine but there is no guaratee that will be the case. I say this because I attended the trials for the adult who stabbed his pit bull Princess 29 times and the judge didn't seem to find it serious until he broke his curfew and landed in jail. Ironically the animal abuser was afraid of the animal welfare people in the courtroom and asked for protection...that is the definition of irony. We can put pressure on the judge once we find out who it is. I want to see an animal abuse registry like the bill passed in Sulfolk county LI and I want this record to follow this deranged individual for years to come. Makes me sick to my stomach. He is a danger to society and the public should know what this unbalanced man is capable of. I hope he pays dearly for this crime.

This kid is complete trash. I know of him and I know that the dog was well behaved so I doubt that he was even peed on. He used to abuse his pregnant girlfriend so I wouldn't doubt that he killed the dog out of sport. He has major issues and needs to be locked up. I hope the judge throws the maximum sentance at him. He doesn't deserve to breathe the same air as the rest of us. I pray for his daughter and hope that her mother has the sense to keep her far away from this scumbag.

We know that serial killers often begin by killing animals. Our justice system needs to begin taking this into account when acts of animal cruelty show up in court. Fines don't do it. They need jail time.

I have already spoken to state and local authorities and have been informed that there is nothing in writing from the court saying that he could not have possession of a dog. Also, at best he will only get a $5,000.00 fine and up to one year in jail (?MAYBE). What I was told is that to save more more animals, we need to write to congress and petition/force them to change the laws. ANIMALS NEED A VOICE, LET US ALL BE THAT VOICE! Bob

Please do something about this. Animal abuse has to stop! It is proven that people who abuse animals are more likely abuse and kill people. I truly believe that one reason why people keep abusing animals is because they feel like they can get away with it. They can not get away with it anymore!

My best friends are dogs and I do cry if one I know or see dies This is very sad worst thing is I grew up in Branford have had many dogs and can't make any sense out of killing your own puppy cause he pees on u It hurts to see another animal die and be treated like trash...
Karen's Dog Training Blog May 16, 2012 at 07:24 PM
Yes this group is the place to go to get laws changed.
dave May 16, 2012 at 08:48 PM
i think this man is a dispicable human being and had every other option available to him than to kill the dog, that being said, i also think its sad that we as a society have more respect for the life of a dog than we have for an unborn child.
dave May 16, 2012 at 10:42 PM
i am sorry if my analogy bothers you but it is relevent when you see the outrage of what this young man did to a dog and we say nothing and even defend the deaths of over 45 million unborn children. like it or not, someone has to say it.
SolarPete May 17, 2012 at 02:07 AM
Dave we do not need this to turn into a way to address everything else wrong in the world This article is about a dog and a young man who tossed the dog out as trash. Itis not about unborn children. Please if u feel u have to broadcast your ideas on human life then say so in a human story, but this is all about the dog and the way he lost his life...
Ellen June 04, 2012 at 12:31 PM
Let's NOT RB... Any woman who can murder her own child is no better than this monster who murdered his dog.

This topic is not about abortion - it is about animal abuse. Please stay on topic. Start your abortion thread somewhere else.
Ellen June 04, 2012 at 02:47 PM
The killing of an innocent unborn child and an innocent animal is the same... murder. Please do NOT dictate what I may or may not discuss in response to the above posts.YOU may not like to hear the truth but you have absolutely no right to try to prevent me from stating it!
Karen's Dog Training Blog June 04, 2012 at 03:08 PM
So how many of you will be able to attend the rally at the next court date? I am going to try to make if. They need more people there
Karen's Dog Training Blog June 04, 2012 at 03:11 PM
Ellen - that may be your truth, but I do beleive it is off topic. Perhaps you could write a patch blog on the topic and not take away from what people here are trying to do about the death of one dog who represents many other animal victims of abuse. This is about Desmond and the animals like him - it is not an abortion debate. Post away, but I for one will no longer read your posts in this thread.

I live a bit too far to attend but my thoughts are with u

As a 38 yr. vegetarian ,I am reading this with an unusual feeling.. I stopped eating meat partially because of the treatment animals get so the above posters can eat them. Nothing against eating meat but the anger at one species being held so far above any other species is interesting..
Bill Fasula June 05, 2012 at 11:32 AM
Please stay on topic or Karen will admonish you!
