Branford High Fire Alarm System Out of Service

An activated sprinkler in a freezer in the cafeteria reportedly led to the malfunction.

While the fire alarm system at is temporarily out of service, fire and school officials maintain that the building is safe for students and faculty.

The alarm went down yesterday, Oct. 13, after a sprinkler head was activated in a walk-in freezer in the school cafeteria at about 12:20 p.m. The students were returned to the building and their normal classes approximately 20 minutes after the alarm activation.

The sprinkler valve was shut off and the water damage was limited to the contents of the freezer and the immediate surrounding area. Representatives from East Shore District Health Department were on scene to oversee the clean-up operations conducted by Branford Public School (BPS) personnel.

Fire officials and repair technicians were unable to reset the alarm system. As a result, the fire alarm system has been taken out of service, pending further repairs or replacement by the technicians. The BPS administration will facilitate the required repairs or replacement and coordinate the required inspections.

The will provide Fire Watch in accordance with the Connecticut Fire Safety Code and The National Fire Protection Association guidelines while the fire alarm system is out of service.
