Home Invasion Suspect Plummets from Balcony

Police say he was chasing a woman and her grandson when he fell.

OUTSIDE NEW HAVEN, CT -- A local man gave a 77-year-old grandmother and her 10-year-old grandson a scare when he allegedly entered their home last night -- but in chasing them, police say he ended up toppling between 35 and 40 feet to the ground from a second-floor balcony.

According to officers, 19-year-old Michael Stokes entered the Harbor Street home in Branford, Conn. through a screen door and began breaking and smashing family possessions while the woman and her 10-year-old grandson hid from him, fearful for their lives.

The woman and her grandson were the only family members home -- others had gone to watch the East Haven fireworks.

According to Branford police, when Stokes took to the second floor the woman and her grandson hid on an outdoor balcony. That's when Stokes followed them -- and took his spill.

Stokes was charged with Home Invasion, Criminal Mischief, 2nd Degree, Risk of Injury to a Minor, Beach of Peace and Reckless Endangerment 2nd Degree. He will be arraigned when he is released from an area medical facility, where he is being held on $200,000 bond.
