Worst Parking Lot in Branford Goes To…

Really? You’re just going to park your car like that and go shopping?

We're unveiling a new column called “Patch Chat” where we hope some local conversations around issues both large and small can grow. If you see something you’d like to discuss with your neighbors, e-mail nicole.ball@patch.com.

Last week I was making a trip into the Stop & Shop on Leetes Island Road and noticed a car parked nearly sideways in a handicap spot. It got me thinking about troublesome parking lots around town.

Stop & Shop can be tough to navigate, but I think I’d have to say that Branhaven Plaza where Big Y is, might be the worst. Let us not forget the unlicensed driver who careened into Radio Shack and Justice for Girls in the plaza last December.

But Branhaven Plaza isn’t the only place where driving goes wrong. A woman decided to dine-in at Yooki Yama last January in the center of town.

What are the most troublesome parking lots in town in your opinion?

Assagio Restaurant Parking Lot. I guess the town thought they were doing a good thing by paving it. But they put that big island right in the middle of it, I guess to see how high weeds would grow. And when the lot is full, there is very little room to get into and out of spaces with that big island. They should have at least put the spaces in at angles. But why would they think of that?

Hey bball fan. Thanks for weighing-in. I, too, find that parking lot tricky! And yes, it is owned by the town, not the restaurant although a lot of people think Assagio owns it. So... I actually think the landscaping has something to do with the water drainage. I think the engineers of the parking lot overhaul thought that would eleviate some of the flooding that occurs in that area. Does it help or hinder is the real question... You can read more about the lot here: http://patch.com/A-dh6B

Thanks Nicole. You'd think they could at least spruce it up so people don't think Assagio doesn't care about it. And like I said, angled spaces would solve the parking problem.

As far as lots, I think one of the worst in the area is Cumberland Farms in Branford. If I get fuel there, I CAN NOT pull away from the pump without driving over the curb and plants within. Who ever approved that lot must drive a tiny 'smart' car, but it has yet to help them become 'smart'.

Nice one Beverage Guy! I can't tell you how many times I've been "trapped" in the parking lot.

Branford Point!

That happened to me trying to turn left on North Main Street coming out of the Cedar Chest store. Traffic coming from the left made it impossible, so I had no choice but to turn right. That is a very bad intersection. Hey Nicole...watch out for those cement blocks at Branford Point Beach!

Linda, I think the access to the Point, where you have navigate in a circle is one of my least favorites. I always have good intentions of going there to sit and reflect for a few minutes and then usually get caught trying to pull in and out... not very relaxing I guess! I also always find myself stuck in the Coastal Wine & Spirits parking lot trying to turn left on Route 1 when I know it's not allowed... then near the Meat House, I can't turn right onto Cedar Street... the I usually cry... ;)

The picture of the car at Stop and Shop is both hilarious and frightening at the same time.

Its more the " drivers " who have mail order licenses , no consideration , no courtesy , more so than the parking lots ! I still haven't figured out how shopping carts go uphill .
Beverage Guy October 02, 2012 at 02:20 PM
I fully agree ted. On a side note, you can get 'mail order' licenses now? I always thought the easy ones were at K-Mart. I'll have to keep that in mind for the kid's licenses as I am sure it would be cheaper also. LOL

Heck, I remember when I got my (what is now a) CDL 'A', the Inspector from DMV had a sidearm. I asked him if the gun was for when someone did REALLY bad on the test.
Steve from SAAC October 02, 2012 at 05:03 PM
I agree wtih Ted also. Drivers in that, and many other parking lots (Branhaven plaza near Kohl's for instance) generally seem to drive way too fast for a parking lot. Pedestrians need to be super-aware of surroundings & moving cars.

I actually find the Starbucks/Subway-strip lot by exit 53 a difficult one to use. Coming out of the Starbucks drive thru and going through that lot can be hazardous, because it's quite hard for the parked cars to get line of sight to anyone coming around behind. It's also a very narrow entrance/exit on the Subway side. Funny tangent: the other day, a police officer in one of the awesome stealth cars had pulled someone over in the Starbucks lot -- facing the wrong direction! That lot can be a tight squeeze anyway, and the addition of a ticket-in-process completely confused the drive thru line. (I'm sure our rubber-necking didn't help. *g*)
Beverage Guy October 02, 2012 at 06:30 PM
That must be why I don't like Starbucks. OK, that and the fact you have to 'make' your own coffee.

If not the worst parking lot, definitely the worst to pull out of!

The WORST is trying to navigate your way through parking at the Short Beach post office. And WHEN there is a resturant on the corner parking is even worse. People park whichever and however they feel, with little regard for people or traffic ( which happens to be a very busy Short Beach Rd ), even parking in residents driveways and lawns. So thats my vote.......

Did someone say Branhaven Plaza? http://branford.patch.com/articles/84-year-old-driver-strikes-84-year-old-pedestrian-in-big-y-parking-lot I guess in a face-off between two 84-year-olds, the one driving the car usually wins... OUCH.
