Then and Now: Mystery Church

What was this church and where was it located?

This week's guessing game comes courtesy of regular Branford Patch contributor Pete. This photo is of an old church that Pete is curious about that used to be located somewhere in Branford. While I do research based on the info Pete's already given me, can you identify this church? Where did it once stand? What denomination worshipped there?

Here's a hint: it wasn't located on Branford Green!

If that's too easy for you, drop us a line in the comments and let us know about other churches along the Shoreline you think might have an interesting history. I'll see what I can dig up!

How about the old Methodist Church that stood on South Main in 1875 and then later became Gaylord's Opera House-might it be that particular church?

Perhpas the original church building on 53 Hopson Avenue that burnt down in the late 1800's and was later rebuilt?

Wow! It's not, but that's an awesome story. If you've got more details, Frank, I'd love to write more about *that* church next week, too!

Not on Hopson either. Linda, was that one of the incarnations of Tabor Lutheran? I feel like I remember that story

Is it St. Stephen's Methodist Episcopal Zion Church?

Good guesses -- keep them coming! No one has hit the jackpot yet. Here are a couple of clues: * The church no longer stands today, but it was associated with a church that is still in Branford. * It was a well used chapel during the tourist era in Branford.

Was it the Pine Orchard Chapel or the Church on Harbor St. Just below Goodsell Rd. At Bfd. Point where the Wadstrom House is located. That was once a Church.

Betsy, you're right -- it's the Harbor Street church that used to be located at Branford Point. Well done! More details about that church when the the follow-up column posts!

It is good to see some folks knew this chapel I remember as a kid walking by the house that stands there now and always wondering why it gave me the feeling as if a church/chapel once stood there. Found it on an old map and did some digging. Discovered a lot about what once was there very interesting Sorry folks can't give u any info on it that is Alana job I passed it on to her. I do hope more fols that grew up in Branford look into their history. If she leaves anything out only then will I add my imput since I had talked to the folks that sponsored this chapel back in time

Pete, I hope you will share your own memories in the comments when the column comes out! Personal experiences give a much fuller picture than the printed word, sometimes!
