This message is to the Branford Board of Education in reference to the recent brush fire near the Branford High School.      The concern about potential respiratory problems did not come out until later in the afternoon when after-hour programs were scheduled. The general public were notified by the Branford Police of the cancellations. It was decided to cancel all after school activities due to smoke conditions. This should have been a concern during the day as well as you had a school full of staff and students with potential underlying medical problems. In the case of my own boys, one has asthma and the other has (who is in an electric wheel chair) is in acute respiratory failure and also has an underlying heart condition. I do not know how many other people in the school have similar problems but this should have been a consideration. My boys (Ryan & Michael) did not complain because they come from "Good Russian Stock, they are tough". They may have an Irish last name but they half Russian. Ryan said that the smoke started to bother him during 7th period. His aide was with him but did not offer any assistance. The Board of ED. and school staff/administration need to pay more attention.
