Obituary: Rosemarie Salperto Buonocore

Rosemarie Salperto Buonocore, of Branford, died peacefully May 14, 2014, at Yale–New Haven Hospital with her family by her side.

She was the devoted wife of Ciro Buonocore. Loving mother of Loren Lynn Curran and her husband Jay. Sister of Lettitia “Letty” Nastri and the late Andrew J. “Drew” Salperto. Loving grandmother to Caleigh Alena and Jack Curran IV.

Rosemarie was born in New Haven September 21, 1935, to the late Andrew and Madeline Martone Salperto.

She attended Nathan Hale School and St. Mary’s Academy, did her undergraduate work at Southern Connecticut State College and received her Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Bridgeport in 1973.

Rosemarie returned to Nathan Hale School as a teacher in 1966 and spent the next 34 years educating the minds and hearts of young children until she retired in 2000.

Her love of all things nautical was evidenced in her classroom’s “Reading Rowboat”—a real boat set up in her reading nook where students could lounge and read.

Both creativity and imagination were trademarks of her teaching career, but her most outstanding trait was her determination to see that every student who crossed her threshold left having mastered the 3 R’s.

Rosemarie was also a cooperative teacher at Southern Connecticut State University for 25 years, training future teachers.

She and her husband Ciro were active members of the Branford Yacht Club.

She enjoyed baking, spending time with family and friends. Her generosity and support of others meant a great deal to her.

Her funeral will leave the IOVANNE FUNERAL HOME, INC., 11 Wooster Pl., Monday morning at 9:30 for a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Elizabeth Church, Branford, at 10:00. Burial will follow in St. Agnes Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Sunday from 3 to 7pm.
