Ireland's History Remembered

A tradition continues and history is remebered.

In 1990, my father, Michael Lynch and his good friend, Jim Reardon decided they would honor the many local residents of Greater New Haven who were personally involved in one of Ireland's most historic events. The 1916 Easter Uprising.

They were surprised by how many people who came to Connecticut were involved with this historic event first hand. At least a dozen personal friends and even some family members. They all participated in Ireland's effort for independence and lived right here. Many have since passed away, as has my father and Mr. Reardon. However the remembrance continues for all involved, now in it's 22nd year.

I would not have continued this tradition after my father's passing in 2008 if it were not for East Haven's Margaret Prendergast, Clinton's Peter McManus and Charlie O'Hagan of New Haven, to mention a few. These three remind me every year, we've all lost someone and today we remember them with honor and pride, publicly, together.

On Sunday, April 22nd at 9 AM on the New Haven Green, there will be Mass for Peace and a Flag Raising ceremony to commemorate the 96th anniversary of the 1916 Easter Uprising. This will include the 31st anniversary of the Hunger Strike at Long Kesh Prison, as well as The Forgotten Ten of 1921.

Following the Mass there will be a ceremony to honor the patriots of 1916, the Hunger Strikers and the Forgotten Ten. This annual public ceremony serves as a reminder to all ethnic groups that freedom and liberty carry a high price. Local honorees are remembered in a roll call and the original "Proclamation of Freedom" will be read.
