Public Meeting Re: New Senior Center for Branford

The group called "Voices for Branford Seniors" is hosting an open-forum style public meeting to discuss a new senior center for Branford. All are welcome.

There is an existing senior center at the former Canoe Brook School, that according to Voices of Branford Seniors member Dorothy Ricker, is "deplorable."

"The parking, ramps, stairs and building make it daunting for seniors with wheelchairs, walkers and canes to enter and exit the building," said Ricker. "The doors are too heavy, there's not enough parking and not enough handicapped spaces."

Ricker added that the "staff at the center is great, but there's a lack of space to carry out good programs."

"Twenty percent of Branford residents are seniors and that's not counting the baby-boomers. The elderly are encouraged to stay in their own homes, but you need an outlet," she said.

Years ago there was a drive to find a new home for seniors in town, she noted, but it went nowhere. There are existing architectural plans for a new building.
