"Handling Emergencies at Sea" Workshop

Saturday, January 11th, we’ll explore handling various types of emergencies at sea.  While one can never anticipate all problems faced at sea, being prepared, thinking through as many variables as possible, ahead of time truly helps when the going gets really rough.

Sharing our collective experiences, and learning how we have each coped, will be a fun & educational experience.  So please come armed with your own stories of handling of emergency situations and what you did to solve them.  This will be a good opportunity to learn from each other.

Remember the old adage, there can be many successful ways to handle a given situation, the only wrong answer is one that fails.

We are so pleased that Tom Kehlenbach III, experienced Captain and owner of Sea Tow in the Branford area since 1990 will join us. Captain Tom will be joined by Captain Jim Cranston. Jim is a retired commander of several U.S. Navy ships as well as submarines. Jim also owned a Grand Banks and has vast experience in cruising and trip planning.  Tom and Jim will share their sea stories and shed some light on being prepared.

We’ll touch on proper radio usage, and handling;

  • Heavy weather,
  • Groundings [to salvage or not, is your boat insurance adequate?]
  • Tricky anchoring conditions,
  • Mechanical and equipment breakdowns,
  • Fires at sea,
  • Medical emergencies,
  • Disgruntled, seasick, (or worse …mutinous…) crew,
  • And the one we all fear, person – (maybe your Captain – double yikes!!) - overboard!
The better prepared we all are, the more confident and safer we are at sea.
We will meet in the conference room above the shops, at Brewer Bruce & Johnson’s Marina, 145 Montowese St., Branford, CT 06405.

Workshops are FREE; please extend this invitation to all your boating friends.  Whether a current Brewer customer or not.  For head count purposes, please call or e-mail Sarah DuBois @ 203-488-8329 ext. 1203 or sdubois@byy.com  if you plan to attend.

Light snacks and coffee are on us!

We look forward to seeing you all soon and Happy New Year!
