Town of Branford Sandy Update

Here's the latest information from the town including school status, debris collection and FEMA information.

Power Restoration

CL&P work crews are working around the clock and have restored power along Rte. 1, at most critical infrastructures and businesses. If you have lost power, please ensure that all electrical appliances, (ie stoves) are off to prevent fires as electricity is restored.
*Remember to treat all downed lines as live wires – Do not touch them or branches entangled in them.*

Fire Safety

Please be cautious when using candles. Make sure they are extinguished if unattended and before going to bed.

Any propane devices for cooking should be used outside only. As temperatures lower, Do not use outdoor cooking appliances for indoor heat.

Shelters & Public Showering Facilities

 Shelters are open at the Branford Recreation Center on Church St.

Planet Fitness and Branford’s YMCA are available for community showering. (please bring your own towels and toiletries).

Federal Disaster Assistance

Residents can begin applying for Public Disaster Assistance immediately by calling 1-800-621-FEMA or online at http://www.disasterassistance.gov

Traffic Control

Per state law – every motorist is required to stop at every intersection with a disabled overhead signal.

Debris 

The Town’s curbside collection has been suspended until Monday.
The town’s Transfer Station at 747 East Main. St. will be open all week until 5:00p.m. including Saturday.

Residents can pile brush at the curb for future collection. However, please do not block storm drains.

Bulky material dumpsters (ie. rugs, furniture, construction debris etc. No Food or Brush) will be located at: 
Parker Memorial Park – Harbor St.
Adult Daycare – Shore Dr.
Pine Orchard Rd. by Riverside Dr.
Thimble Island Rd (between the flag pole and the beach)
Fire Company 9 – Linden Ave. VFW parking lot – Indian Neck Ave. at South Montowese St.
Beckett Ave. by Bristol St.

Health Issues

*The Public Water Supply in Branford Is Safe For Drinking*
Absolutely NO SWIMMING in the Sound and all shell fishing beds are closed. Bacteria levels rise after hurricanes and tropical storms. If your power is out for more than 24 hours, check the food in your refrigerator: When in doubt… throw it out! Restaurants that were closed and reopened after the storm were required to be inspected by the Health Department. Their inspection permits should be posted at their entrances so patrons can ensure all health compliances have been met.

School

Public schools are canceled for Friday and the Superintendent of Schools anticipates reopening by Monday.
