Branford Police have just reported that CL&P has stated the nearly 100 percent power outage tonight was cause by a substation issue and crews are enroute to work on the problem. The substation that caused the outage is located in Branford but Police were unable to say which station it was – either East Main Street or Meadow Street. There has been no official timeframe for power restoration.

Please check back for details.

Power went out, got my flashlight...and yes, I thought here we go again. I reported it to CL&P. Glad to see it came back on within an hour, so that I could shut eveything off that I left on. Nicole, your so informative...thanks for the updates!

Thankyou, I will now that everything's back to normal-- no worryin about "what happened?" We can rest assured knowing that Nicole is on the report when events like this come up in our little town of Branford!

We need to stay on top of CL&P to find out why it happened in the first place. A town-wide blackout is not a joke and seems indicative of huge problems with the town's electric service.

Meadow Street was pretty flooded last night, but it has flooded many times in the 13 years we've lived in Branford and we haven't lost power like that. My nerves can't handle any more power outages.

Heather I totally agree with you. After 11 days of no power after Irene, I am not ready to deal with another power outage. Was nice it came back on quickly.

RB, in the 13 years we have lived in this house we have lost power for more than 10 minutes twice that I can remember -- 24 hours in the day after Christmas storm this past winter due to a downed wire at the end of our street, and 7 days, 11 hours after Irene. Yes, power outages happen and normally I would just be slightly annoyed by it, but the memory of Irene is too fresh to take any power outage lightly. Now, if you'd like to buy me a generator I'll gladly take it, but unfortunately my budget doesn't allow for that kind of expenditure, nor does the budget of most of the people I know. So I'm afraid my poor nerves will stay vulnerable.

I've contacted CL&P to find out why Branford had a 97% blackout last night. Soon as I find out, I will let you all know. There has been nothing verified except that it was a substation problem. Stay tuned...

Hi Lyle. I am going to take a spin over to the Creek later. About 75 percent of Branford still out according to CL&P at 11:30 a.m. Just so you know, this story above is from Sept. 2011-- it's when there was a widespread power outage then. Here's the latest press release about this outage from CL&P http://branford.patch.com/articles/clp-restores-power-to-210000-but-no-timeline-offered-for-430000-still-without-it-3ee7731d
