Hurricane Sandy: The Latest on Power, School and Halloween

Branford is working on getting residents back on the power grid; Trick-or-Treating postponed.

CL&P work crews are restoring power along state roads, in areas of critical infrastructures and businesses.

*Remember to treat all downed lines as live wires – Do not touch them or branches entangled in them.*

Fire Safety

Please be cautious when using candles. Make sure they are extinguished if unattended and before going to bed.

Any propane devices for cooking should be used outside only. Make sure propane is turned off at the tank when not in use. The Fire Department cannot pump out your basement however contractors who specialize in flooding cleanup may be found in the phone book. Residents can find safety information packets at all Branford Firehouses.

Shelters & Public Showering Facilities

Shelters are open at the Branford High School at 185 East Main Street and the Mary Murphy School at 14 Brushy Plain Road for those families that require sheltering with pets. 

Planet Fitness has offered their business for any Branford resident who needs showering facilities (please bring our own towels and toiletries).

Traffic Control

Per state law – every motorist is required to stop at every intersection with a disabled overhead signal.

Debris 

The Town’s curbside collection has been suspended and will resume its normal schedule on Monday.The town’s Transfer Station at 747 East Main. St. will be open all week until 5:00p.m. including Saturday.

Please clear any debris away from storm drains by your home.
Bulky material dumpsters (ie. rugs, furniture, construction debris etc.) will be located at:
Parker Memorial Park, Harbor St.
Adult Daycare – Shore
Dr.Pine Orchard Rd. by railroad overpass
Thimble Island Rd (between the flag pole and the beach)
Fire Company 9 – Linden Ave. VFW parking lot – Indian Neck Ave. at South Montowese St.

Health Issues

Absolutely NO SWIMMING in the Sound and all shell fishing beds are closed. Bacteria levels rise after hurricanes and tropical storms.
If your power is out for more than 24 hours, check the food in your refrigerator: When in doubt… throw it out!

School
Public schools have been canceled until further notice by the Superintendent of Schools. 

Halloween Safety

 For the safety of our children, the Mayors and Selectmans in Branford and surrounding communities have cancelled Halloween until Wednesday, November 7th.
