Branford Newlyweds Win CT Lottery "Set for Life"

The CT Lottery just announced that 27-year-old Brian Cahill and his wife Emily Cahill have struck it big winning Set For Life 2nd Edition. They will receive $100,000 a year for life, with a guaranteed minimum payout of $2,000,000.

The homegrown couple, both graduates, married just a month ago.

According to a CT Lottery spokesperson, Brian, an electrical engineer, bought the $10 lottery ticket hoping to offset the cost of their recent wedding. He's never purchased a $10 lottery ticket before according to the CT Lottery.

Brian and Emily went to the CT Lottery headquarters yesterday in Rocky Hill to pick up their first check of $68,503 (prize value after taxes).

According to the Lottery's press release, Cahill purchased the ticket from a 7-Eleven on the Boston Post Road in Milford. The CT Lottery spokesperson said that Cahill was going into the store to purchase Gatorade and decided to buy the lottery tickets as well. After purchasing the scratch-off, Cahill put the ticket in his back pocket and went to his work at his job site.

"Later that day, Cahill scratched the ticket and revealed a matching pair of 5’s," according to the CT State Lottery. "Scratching the prize area, Cahill saw the “Set for Life” symbol and learned he’d just won $100,000 a year, every year, for the rest of his life."

He said, “I called Emily and told her, ‘I think we just won the lottery,’ but she didn’t believe me. So, I sent her a picture of the ticket on my cell phone."

Today Brian and Emily are back to life as usual. Emily, an 8th-grade language arts teacher at was back to waiting tables at – her summer job – and Brian was on the job site.

Still in shock, Brian said, "We're not making any drastic life changes."

With the first check, Brian said he and Emily will pay off credit card debt and student loans. After that, he added, they will begin saving for a house.
