Branford Headed for the Deep Freeze

Temperatures will be unseasonably cold this week.

After a glimpse of spring-like temperatures over the weekend, Branford is headed into the depths of winter this week.

Temperatures will be even colder than normal for the third week in January, according to the National Weather Service. The weather service warns that "prolonged exposure to these dangerously cold conditions could result in frostbite, hypothermia, or death."

Snow that started on Monday night is expected to end Tuesday morning, with accumulations of 1 to 3 inches likely.

The high for Tuesday should be 26 degrees with the low forecast as 6 degrees.

Wednesday and Thursday look to be the coldest days with a high of 19 and a low around 4 for Wednesday, and similar temperatures predicted for Thursday.

Another winter storm may be on its way for Friday. The National Weather Service now predicts a 50 percent chance of precipitation.

Keep that winter gear around because temperatures are not likely to see the 30s again until next Monday.

The National Weather Service's characterization of daytime temperatures in the 20's as 'colder than normal' for the third week in January is yet another indication that we are living in the new normal predicted by climate scientists. I doubt that the predicted six days of slightly below-freeing temperatures will be enough to make our local ponds safe for ice skating. I remember more than one year in the 1980s, shortly after I moved to Branford from the Boston area, when temperatures dropped into the 'teens and low 20's the week after Christmas and stayed there for most of January.
