Citizens Urged to Conserve Plum Island at Public Hearing

Plum Island is at risk of being sold to the highest bidder. Tell the U.S. General Services Administration that you want a conservation sale at its October 17 public hearing.

Plum Island, the 843-acre island just 10 miles off the coast of Connecticut, is on the government's auction block to be sold to the highest bidder. Due to its partial use as a federal research facility, most of the island has remained an undeveloped sanctuary for wildlife, like Osprey, Bank Swallow, and Piping Plovers, and native plants.

The research center is being moved to a new, higher security location in Kansas and the federal government is selling Plum Island, putting this rare island at risk of intensive private development that could ruin wildlife habitats, pollute the Sound, and precule future public access.

The U.S. General Services Administration recently released its Draft Environmental Impact Statement for Plum Island in which it recommends a sale of the island without requiring any conservation.

On October 17, GSA is holding a public hearing to get input on its Draft Environmental Impact Statement. Join us at the hearing and tell GSA that a sale of Plum Island without conservation is not an option!
