Penner Law Firm Runs Local Holiday Food Drive

Penner Law Firm is partnering with the Branford Food Pantry to bring food and joy to Branford residents in need this year. Throughout the next month, Penner Law Firm will be collecting non-perishable food items to donate to the Branford Food Pantry. The food drive will culminate on December 13th, when Penner Law Firm hosts their Holiday Party and Food Drive in their Branford office, across from the Branford town green.

Penner Law Firm will serve free beverages and appetizers during the party, and will conduct a raffle at the end of the party for all those who have donated. “We welcome everyone to stop by our office, network with one another, and show their support” said Andrew Penner, Marketing Director at Penner Law Firm and Branford resident. “The more people that show up, the greater chance we have of reaching our goal. We are encouraging all employees to donate, but we will also need some help from the community.” Penner Law Firm aims to collect over 500 food items over the next month to donate to the Branford Food Pantry.

The Branford Food Pantry (formerly Branford Food Council) was started by Branford churches over 33 years ago. The Branford Food Pantry helps around 120 Branford families each week by supplying groceries that these families may not be able to afford otherwise. “In the winter, many of these families must choose between heat or groceries,” said Wendy Cowles, President of the Branford Food Pantry. She added “Our mission this time of year is to supplement their groceries so that they can afford to have both.”

The holidays draw an even larger crowd, with an average of 225 families seeking help with their holiday meals. Demand is sure to increase even more this holiday season, as SNAP (food stamps) benefits were cut effective November 1st. This cut will impact over 420,000 Connecticut residents whose food stamps were cut $11 per month for a single person, and $36 per month for a family of four. “The amount may be small, but it can mean a few days of groceries for these families” said Cowles.

If the goal of 500 food items is met, Penner Law Firm’s donation should help supply a significant portion of all these meals during the holiday season. “No matter how much is given, it all adds up” said Cowles, “Anything you can give is more than we had ten minutes ago.”
