Report: Branford Costco Development Plans On Hold

The project's forward momentum has stalled as those involved focus on addressing the concerns of adjacent property owners, zoning and wetlands issues and other items related to the proposal, according to a New Haven Register report.

A proposal to develop a new Costco retail center off Interstate 95 in Branford "is indefinitely on hold," according to a New Haven Register report

The project's forward momentum has stalled as those involved work to "tie up loose ends" such as concerns of adjacent property owners, zoning and wetlands issues and other items related to the proposal, The Register reports.

Although the latest plans to develop the center near Leetes Island Road were first discussed several weeks ago at a Planning & Zoning Meeting in mid-November, the proposal to build a Costco off Exit 56 has been around for more than two years.

According to The Register report, majority property owner Charles Weber stated the plans introduced at November's P&Z meeting were "inaccurate and should be disregarded."

The Town should capitalize on the property that it owns (about 20 acres) at exit 53.

I can't wait for Costco to open at exit 56. It's convenient and away from the crowded part of town. I don't like Wal-Mart and I'm tired of driving to Target all the time. It won't hurt Stop & Shop to have a little competition.

It doesn't surprise me at all. To get any project approved in Branford is very difficult, burdened with so many regulations,it will never, ever happen. It will be built in a town that welcomes businesses with open arms, and create jobs and a tax base somewhere else.

Exit 56 is all business & industrial zoned. It's the perfect place for a Costco. Branford needs this for sure...jobs, taxes, cheaper prescription drugs and eyeglasses. More this thing forward.

please, bring it on. the sooner the better. the positives for Branford and it's residents far outweigh any negatives. viv r.

the only thing in Branford that gets approved are things like the giant firehouse that is not used the way they said it would be from the start, now the town is going to build a building for public works more millions of dollars for tax payers to pay.......

I agree Bill..... people are going to Milford to COSTCO, Orange to Trader Joe's, North Haven to BJ's.... let's bring the revenue/jobs to Branford

I have never been in a Costco ,but have read up on them and they are a very good business. I would look forward to them coming to Branford, and the selected location is perfect. It will not happen in Branford, every known obstacle and regulation will be thrown at them so they might as well save their resources and go look elsewhere. Proposed new businesses are not welcomed here, it will be mired in years of beauracratic nonsense, chewed up and spit out. It will be reviewed, revamped and rejected. Already the owner has said to "disregard' the original plans. I'm sure he was read the riot act or realized what he will be up against. We will continue to drive to North Haven,Milford etc for our shopping. Just the way it is here in Branford. Build a monumental firehouse that is just an ego booster for some pompous architectural firm on our dime, try to jam a preposterous Public Works project down our throats, but have a normal business succeed in opening its doors here....forget about it.
