McDonald's To Close I-95 Service Plaza Restaurants in Branford and Madison

Branford service plaza renovations slated to begin in March.

If stopping at Mickey D’s for a quick snack along the highway is part of your routine, you may be in for a surprise.

at the Branford I-95 southbound and Madison I-95 northbound service plazas will be closing permanently, according to Connecticut Department of Transportation Spokesman Judd Everhart.

The 5,600-square-foot Branford southbound plaza is the last service area on I-95 south before the I-91 junction in New Haven while the 6,000-square-foot Madison northbound plaza is the last food and fuel service plaza on I-95 north.

These service plazas are the smallest on I-95. They each have a McDonald’s Restaurant and Mobil gas station. The dining rooms feature large floor-to-ceiling glass windows.

Unlike its larger sister I-95 service plazas, they do not have additional food vendors or a gift shop.

Both Branford service plazas (north and south) will close for renovations in March with a scheduled reopening in January 2013.

The Madison Service Areas are scheduled to close for renovations in March 2013 with a slated reopening in March 2014.

After renovations are completed, travelers can visit the Branford southbound and Madison northbound plazas, which will house a Subway, Dunkin’ Donuts, Fast Freddie’s Convenience Store, and a updated Mobil gas station.

Those tenants listed above will gradually open in all of  and three after renovations are completed by Project Service, LLC.

Folks can continue to get their Big Macs at renovated McDonald’s at the larger Branford northbound and Madison southbound service plazas.

There are nearby McDonald’s located at 108 West Main Street in Clinton, 617 Boston Post Road in Guilford, 280 Branford Road in North Branford, and 424 West Main Street in Branford.

McDonald’s, a main stay on I-95 in Connecticut since the 1980s, does not have plans to open additional outlets at the state’s smaller service plazas on Route 15 or I-395.

The DOT confirmed that McDonald's will still welcome travelers at the northbound and southbound I-95 service plazas in Darien, Farfield, and Milford. The Darien service plaza has one of the busiest McDonald's in the country.

Confusing article. First it says southbound Branford and northbound Madison are closing permanently. Then it says both Branfords rest areas will reopen in Jan. 2013 and Madison rest areas will reopen in Mar. 2014. The 2 that are closing are the only 2 I use based on where I get on the highway. Phooey!

I know it's confusing Sally! I tried to re-write to make clear! BOTH Branford reststops as the article states, will be closed for renovations. The McDonald's will re-open on the northbound side but as I understand, not the southbound side. Does that help?

Sally, actually the southbound Branford and northbound Madison McDonald's restaurants are closing permanently, not the actual service plaza itself just the food vendor. It is true that Branford's service plazas will reopen in Jan. 2013 and Madison's will reopen in Mar. 2014. However, the southbound Branford and northbound Madison will no longer have a McDonald's restaurant but will have the other food vendors as mentioned.

In other words, you can still visit either service plaza (SB Branford or NB Madison) for a pit stop; just not while they are closed for renovations. If you want to eat at McDonald's after renovations you would have to visit either the NB Branford or SB Madison service plazas (right across the highway).
