Video: Customers, Employees and Owners React to Cohen's Closing

Last thoughts from fans and staff.

UPDATE (7/2/2012):

On their last day of business, we visited Cohen's Bagel Company in Branford to find out how owners Rob and Christine Cohen are handling the sudden shock -- and where they'll go next. We also spoke with Cohen's employees about their jobs and asked customers how they felt when they heard the news.

To learn more, watch the video above. (And if you watch carefully, at the beginning of the video, you'll see the last tray of Cohen's bagels in Branford being stacked.)

--------

Following what their Facebook page describes as sour lease negotiations, owners of have closed their doors and begun moving out of their storefront at 1008 Main Street. On the company's Facebook page, owner Christine Cohen described it as a "last-minute shock."

"Not looking good folks," wrote Cohen on the page. "Please come and visit us on our last day in Branford, tomorrow! We'll be saying our goodbyes after 5 awesome years! New chapter for Cohen's."

Cohen says it will likely take more than a day to move much of the equipment out of the location -- she and her husband Rob will have to hire a truck for some of the heavier equipment. But the shop has sold its last batch of bagels in Branford.

Cohen's still maintains another location in Madison.

Boo!

Sad to hear that. I will drive to Madison to get excellent Cohen's bagels if need be, but I sure hope they can maintain a Branford location somewhere. Like Ashley's, Cohen's is a cherished Branford establishment.

Not sure I will get to the Madison locaton that often. Branford was convenient. Whenever I happened to be downtown in the morning I would stop. Hopefully they will open a new Branford location.

why dont they try moving to the retail space on brushy plains. (next to born in america pizza) No its not on green but it is high traffic ,( lots can run in before heading to work on 95or rye 80) better parking and still in branford and most who like bagels will follow them....

It is really crappy that the employees at this location only had a one day notice before losing their jobs...not a good way to run any business!!!
Cohens Bagel Company July 01, 2012 at 07:52 PM
Agreed! That is why they won't be losing their jobs. We've spoken to all of the employees and are working to provide them with as many hours as we can. It's a shame that we only had a day's notice that we were losing our business after five years as well, but we're really trying to keep positive. For our team members that are unable to travel to Madison, we're in touch with other area businesses for referrals. Thank you all for your awesome posts and great support over the last five years - especially on this stressful weekend! The Branford community has been so welcoming and we'll miss everyone terribly! Please visit us in Madison if you are able!

The owners of Cohen's have great integrity and I'm sure they will do all they can to assist their employees. This could turn into a bigger business opportunity elsewhere that employs not only the previously employed but new ones as well! I wish the Cohens luck in their next venture!

Who is the landlord there? It sounds rather fishy on that end- you don't get a days notice from a good landlord. They are not too intelligent to allow just a great place to leave the center of town.
Cheri July 02, 2012 at 11:29 AM
This is just so sad. The center of town is our social mecca. Losing a place like Cohen's is just wrong especially since it always seemed to be such a delightful and (yummy) gathering place. I truly hope the landlord doesn't lease the space to yet another nail salon......and I truly, truly hope that Cohen's can find a spot in Branford that will accommodate their needs, those of their employees and allow us Branford folk to continue to enjoy their tasty treats. Take heed uncompromising commercial property owners, don't irritate Branford residents and force us to take our business outside of our own community.

omg!! I love that place. What happened that it had to close? They made my breakfast sandwich just so perfect and a young lady there made my coffee the best way ever! I am def going to miss them. :(
