New Haven Wants Occupy Gone by Wednesday

The protesters plan on staying put despite the city's orders.

Occupy New Haven may have made it through the coldest days of winter, but it looks like they won’t be going much further if the city has its way. New Haven is demanding that the “occupiers” pack up and leave the downtown green by noon on Wednesday, March 14.

The Occupy crowd plans on staying put according to the Hartford Courant. They reportedly won’t be leaving because the city hasn’t met the group’s demands “for improved school funding and low-income housing, longer library hours and an end to foreclosures. A lawyer for the protesters says it could take years in court proceedings to evict the occupiers.”

Occupy New Haven began in October with a . The numbers dwindled over the months, but the protesters developed a semi-permanent home on the New Haven Green through the and .

Arrest all occupiers who refuse to leave, bulldoze the tent city while they are being processed. Done.

First amendment. Period.

Leave the encampment. Support free speech, first amendment. Laws that restrict constitutional rights are out of compliance with the radical roots of our democracy. No more smoke screen democracy!

It is time this country learned something about values. Real history reveals the repressed, fake story we have been fed in support of economic and social systems that are intended to enslave and control the vast majority of people in this country. Freedom means more than the freedom to get rich, regardless of the effects of that effort on our neighbors. Social systems that rely on the worst aspects of human nature are systems that call forth those very aspects, and even promote human evolution in that direction. There are alternatives - and they don't lead to annihilation as do the current systems. They are, in fact, organized around life rather than the destruction of life. This is the choice currently faced. This is the energy of occupy. Everyone should come out and flood the NH green with song, dance and celebration starting now and not stopping. For anything.

Hey Bill just like the country has been bulldozed with the bamboozling of Lobbyists purchasing laws through ALEC, oh you have no idea what ALEC is, or maybe how miranda and habeus corpus has been bulldozed with NDAA being passed in the middle of the night NYE and then EEA with the following week, oh you have no idea what that is either?. Guess it doesn't come with the made in China flag that you wave on the 4th of July, you know that holiday honored by that silly little document you think guzzling beer and setting off fireworks defines, and then of course the other documents that define our country like We the People, not the corporations, (and btw When a Corporation: Physically Gives Birth, Receives a mortal wound on the front line of a war and is given a flag draped casket and physically buried in the ground and decomposes, THEN and ONLY THEN will I acknowledge that a corporation is a person) or maybe like the Bill of Rights that is being made into toilet paper with the help of people like you who will fight tooth and nail to defend the greed. Do you enjoy that $5 a gal gas, wait till it's $10, and don't forget your checkbook when you go to the polls on election day, the new way to vote in Amerika, don't mind the drones or eyes in the sky
Occupy Tabs March 13, 2012 at 03:34 am
To people who question why I occupy I ask this:
Do you steal from the country by passing legislation through Lobbyists to benefit corporations (ALEC)? Do you outsource jobs because of tax benefits? Do you control and poison the food like Monsanto? Do you threaten the country with a crash, ask for a bail and take bonuses and expect the taxpayers to continue this addiction? Do you send family members off to wars under the guise of Democracy to acquire resources and then pass laws like NDAA & EEA overnite during NYE. Drones are approved to survey you, as well as constant surveillance everywhere you go now. If you don't then maybe you should re-examine why you aren't out there with us & doing what it means to be a true American practicing our doctrines, and not just waving flags & wearing pins (made in china) on command when the bobbing head show tells you to. There will not be a television special about it, msm is owned and will not provide anything but the movie script. Wake up!

Hell yeah, Tabs! Great response!

What part of "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances" was unclear??
Brass balls, city administration. Shame! Just because you don't like the way they're protesting doesn't mean it's not a valid form of protest. They're not lighting things on fire or blowing things up, for God's sake... let them be! We send troops overseas to bomb everything to hell and back, and oppress other countries' citizens, but it wasn't enough to stop there, was it? Now we're turning the police against our own citizens for simply being in a certain place for a certain amount of time? Don't make the oppression in this world worse than it already is! If you don't like what the protest looks like, do the right thing and offer to help fix it instead of stifling other peoples' free expression and exchange of ideas!

What is your solution for America who competes in a global economy? One World Order? Unfortunately, in the real world your ideas don't work unless you can get everyone to think exactly like you... and that is not going to happen ... not now... not ever.
You are correct to raise awareness to the real ills of our society... but what methods or means do you have or suggest to make others cure these ills? Occupying space is a demonstration of your beliefs.. not a solution to the problem. The crack in the Liberty Bell is a reminder to all of us that our country is not perfect. But think of the difference between those on the Green who choose to protest and those in Syria who choose to protest....I'll take our broken system anyday. Your quotes from the Constitution sound noble.... but they also must be taken in the context and spirit that they were written. Freedom of speech, for example, has it's limitations. You know that as well as I do... if you are a Constitutionalist. It's may be more difficult to change the system from within, but you have a better chance of success than by "Occupying." I watched the same thing happen in the 1960's. The issues were more real, the crowds were much larger and the movement that demanded change was much more powerful thar Occupy. Things did change... not overnight.. but they did change. Relax. In a democracy things take time to change for a reason. I'm not certain that you know or understand that reason.

JUST Pass a new ordence about sleeping on public property or in right of ways. St Peteresburg FL did this because of the homeless sleeping in right of ways, on side walkways and on public property. Once the city passed the new rules they all but disappeared. Maybe New Haven needs to do this too! Just don't single out any one group pass this for anyone and everyone. U do have the right to protest, but u do not have the rights to become squarters, u r just like the homeless and where do u think u have the rights to DEMAND anything. So the city has their demands remove ur self off the public green so others might enjoy this space. As for companies helping u I say fine these companies for their free advertising of their companies products
SolarPete March 13, 2012 at 12:22 pm
how about we all come to ur street and sit out in front of ur home and do the same thing how long will u enjoy our company

Wonder if there r any laws about smoking in a public place, maybe sleeping in a public park, camping on public land owned by the city humm what laws are being broken to a bunch of no named folks who feel it's their right to camp out in public and place demands on city folks Now the city is placing the demands on u move out or be arrested for public exposure
Josh March 13, 2012 at 01:26 pm
Where do we get the rights to demand anything? Funny you should ask. Elected officials work for and are accountable to the people, and as such, citizens have the right to ask the city administration for anything they want to see happen in the city.
The city is in no position to make demands, because the people don't work for the government; the government works for the people. It's long overdue that we started using our power as American citizens again, instead of falling asleep at the yoke and trusting the auto-pilot to fly us everywhere.
Dr. Alfred C. Whitehead March 13, 2012 at 02:31 pm
@Josh.. you are right.... the government should work FOR the people. That means ALL THE PEOPLE... not just a handful who consider their rights and opinions as the standard bearer in an issue.
If I choose to exercise my right to occupy the same exact space as your movement has done on the Green, what would you suggest I do? Find my own space somewhere else on the Green? It is a big Green! Here is the issue.. New Haven Green is not "public property." You do not have the "right" to occupy it anymore than you have the "right" to occupy someone's private property. The city government did work for Occupy (and you) in allowing them to stay. The government also asked politely that you leave after staying longer than most of the other Occupy movements around the country. You do realize that there was a cost to the taxpayers for your stay and now its time for you and your followers to move on with your movement intellectually, physically and politically. There are other citizens and taxpayers who may want to use that parcel of the Green as you have done over the last several months. They also have a right to assemble and free speech.
