What is The Summer Slide?

Maybe parents are thinking about summer nights at the pool, beach or playground, but educators and researchers are referring to Summer Learning Loss, which commonly happens over the summer vacation.  Unfortunately, research shows that kids forget what they learn during the school year, over the summer months. 

Summer learning loss is also especially concerning for elementary children because these years are the most crucial in creating a foundation for life-long learning. In fact, studies also show that if a child is not reading on grade level by the third grade, that the overall outcome and even graduation rates are impacted.

The Branford Department of Recreation and the Branford Early Childhood Collaborative are teaming up to provide tutoring at the Branford Rec's Summer Camp Program.  RecREADS is for kids entering 1st and 2nd grade that need a little extra reading support during the summer months.  

Three days a week, your child will participate in either a small group setting or receive one on one tutoring, depending upon an initial evaluation by our certified reading specialist. Our goal is to focus on the necessary reading skills that will help increase your child’s reading levels and decrease the retention loss that occurs during the summer months.  
Your child must have scored below grade level expectations on their spring DRA‐2 test to be eligible for this program. Those results are available to parents through your child's teacher.

Your child does not have to attend Branford Rec Day Camp to participate in RecREADS. 

Tutoring will take place before camp begins and camp staff will transport them to and from the Hammer Field Site. (Before Care will be free of charge for those participants).

When to Register. March 7, 2012 Fee: $10.00
Dates: Monday, Wednesday & Friday beginning July 1st though August 9th.
Time: 7:45am‐9:15am (20 minute blocks)
Timeslots will be assigned during this block of time.
